How to tell whether your kitchen needs new cabinets, or just a new finish.
Most kitchens are replaced because the finish looks dated, not because the cabinets are failing. If the boxes are solid, the doors close properly and the layout works for you, refinishing gives you a new-looking kitchen at a fraction of the cost and in a fraction of the time.
Replacement makes sense when boxes are water-damaged or delaminating, when you want a different layout, or when the doors are a style you'd never keep even with a new color.

Refinish if: the cabinet boxes are solid wood or quality plywood; doors and drawers open and close well; you like the layout; the problem is color, stain or worn finish.
Consider replacing if: boxes are swollen from water or peeling laminate; you're moving walls, plumbing or appliances; or you want a completely different door style.
For solid cabinets in a layout you like, yes. You keep the boxes, counters and plumbing, and get a new finish in about a week.
Replacement often means weeks without a kitchen, plus countertop and plumbing work. A refinish is usually about a week.
Sometimes, with specialty primers, but peeling thermofoil usually has to be removed first. We'll tell you honestly at the estimate.
